Target Clientele
Children and adults (6 years and older) who:
Target Skills
Mode: Visual
Principal skill(s) targeted: Figure-ground discrimination
Figure-ground discrimination is a perceptual function that enables a given space to be perceived as a figure; that is, an object surrounded by a well defined contour. The ground is the space surrounding the figure. The perceptual system that differentiates figure from ground allows one to distinguish among material in the visual field. The ease with which this is done varies according to certain characteristics of the material contained within the visual field. For example, a form inside a second form will be more easily perceived as a figure than its surrounding form.
Exercises
Levels Stimuli Classes: Sole 20
Scenario and task: The exercises take place in a scenario involving a painter at work. The form of which he is thinking about is presented in a thought bubble and a more complex figure is presented in his painting. The client’s task consists of finding what the painter is thinking within the painting containing several figures. This target figure is a part of several other geometric forms that create an overall image. In the higher levels, the target figure is comprised itself of several geometric forms. It is thus recreated by pointing to more than one figure in the painting. Within the higher levels, where the target figure is more complex (i.e. involving several shapes) and when two errors are made, the program provides a part of the target figure with the mention «This polygon is part of the figure». This enables the client who commits two consecutive errors to orient his or her search.
Response mode(s): Click on the mouse or use arrow keys and the space bar to select.
Feedback:
Well Done! Correct response Try again First incorrect response (client is given another opportunity to respond) Here is the figure you are looking for… Second incorrect response (followed by the correct response) The figure is complete When the complex figure is reconstructed
Difficulty Level Variables
Level Completion Criterion: 3 consecutive successfully completed trials (recognition phases) in which all items were correct
The exam
The exam is comprised of 20 items involving simple figures representative of the program’s contents.
